Future

• Plastic Optical Fibre (POF): Plastic optical fibre addresses a similar market to multimode fibre except at a more attractive price point. However, plastic optical fibre does not quite have the bandwidth necessary to address the data rates offered by the DSOI. When it does it will rapidly overtake multimode fibre at short-range while depressing multimode sales at the same time. POF versions of the DSOI will be made available at this time.

• Waveguide (WG): Waveguide DSOI versions are designed to optically communicate between devices on a single PCB such as CPU and memory or between different PCBs in a system through a backplane. This is an emerging market since intra- and inter-board waveguides have not entered large scale production. Such devices are expected to appear about 2008.

• Multi-Point (MP): Such devices incorporate large-scale FPGAs with multiple compact optical fibre connectors. They will be used to switch and process high speed optical data from different sources. These devices can be produced to special order - please click here for details.
